148/365: 365 Days Ago…
My life forever changed.
365 days ago I was getting off the couch and I lost my ability to use my left leg. I had just severely ruptured the disc in my back between L5/S1. It was just a simple move that pushed my herniated disc too far. At the time, I did not even know I had a herniated disc, I was under the impression, I had a left hamstring injury from exercising… boy was I wrong. My family rushed me to the emergency room where the next day I had emergency spinal surgery, after-which I regained the ability to use my left leg.
The following 364 days have been spent recovering, going to physical therapy, re-injuring my spine in physical therapy, having spinal fusion surgery, recovering, having another surgery to remove the large screws in my spine and just recently starting physical therapy again…
I saw Doctor Kevin James, my back surgeon this week. I am officially released from his care. It has been a long year and the journey is still young… It is an emotional week, I still have a long way to recover, but I can see the light.
I want to take a moment to thank my family, everyone on my medical team, all those who prayed, everyone who sent me positivity, and God… who really does answer prayers and perform miracles.
Photo: This photo seemed fitting. It is me on top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire (I took the cog railway to get to the top). When I started exercising 2.5 years ago, my goal was to get strong enough and fit enough to climb a mountain. I will climb a mountain one day with hard work and determination, I can do anything I put my mind to.
